Cat Routine Health Care
By Paul Kramer

Good health care, including daily attention at home and visits to the veterinarian, is essential if you want your cat to stay healthy as long as possible. Even if she seems to be fine, regular veterinary care can detect potential problems, and ideally, keep them under control.

Many veterinarians now offer geriatric preventive care programs designed to prolong the lives and good health of older animals. In addition to the regular general examinations recommended throughout life, geriatric wellness programs usually include additional diagnostic tests as appropriate for the individual cat.

Among the tests that may be included at different intervals are urinalysis, blood count or CBC, blood chemistry panel, testing for FIV and FeLV, electrocardiogram or EKG, thyroid testing, radiographs or X-rays, blood pressure monitoring, and pre-anesthetic screening if your cat needs aensthesia.

You also play an important part in your cat's wellness program, of course. Hopefully, you can handle your cat every day. When you cuddle or groom her, pay attention to anything different or unusual you may notice, and tell your vat about any lumps, sores, hair loss, changes in eating or elimination habits, sudden weight gain or loss, strange odors, or other physical changes.

Watch her behavior as well; health problems can be at the root of behavioral changes. You can expect some change as your cat gets older, but extreme or sudden changes may be symptomatic or illness or disease.

Although not the most pleasant part of owning a cat, the fact is that the litter box can provide clues to your cat's health. Changes in the amount or color of her urine, or in the color, consistency, volume, and frequency of her bowel movements, may signal health issues.

Similarly; although older cats typically lose some weight as they lose muscle, a sudden gain or loss of more than a pound or two (0.5 to 1 kg) may be significant. Tell Your veterinarian about any of these changes.
